An exploration of the history of women of African descent and their struggles, based on the archives of the Marguerite Durand Library
Come discover a selection of documents on the theme of African women and Black feminisms. From the colonial gaze upon women in Black Africa, through women's associations in the French West Indies, the struggles of migrant women, international conferences, the place of women of African descent in French movements of the 1970s and 80s, queer movements, to some major figures in contemporary feminism and artistic creation, our collections bring together photographs, postcards, posters, brochures, magazines, and press articles tracing the history of these emancipation struggles. To complement the exhibition, here is a bibliography that covers the subject more broadly: the condition of women in Africa and in the diasporas, major figures in literature or history, colonization, migration, American Black feminism, intersectionality, decolonial feminism, or even online feminism.
