Community gardens first appeared in France in the early 21st century, driven by activists inspired in particular by their discovery of New York’s community gardens. The two speakers will describe the political and cultural context in which collective gardens emerged in the Big Apple and Paris, and discuss the transatlantic dialogue established between participants on both sides of the Atlantic." La Goutte d’Or s’arrache au bitume Festival des jardins partagés is an unmissable autumn event in La Goutte d'Or, organized by a collective of associations in partnership with Université Paris Nanterre, bibliothèque Goutte d'or and Institut des Cultures d'islam. It includes talks, walks through the neighborhood’s gardens and green spaces, botanical drawing, foraging and cooking workshops, photography and drawing exhibitions, and film screenings. The collective organizing the festival includes the neighborhood’s five community gardens: Jardins Aziza et Bashung (la Goutte Verte), l'Univert (Halage), le Jardin de la Table ouverte (La Table Ouverte), le Jardin de l'Assommoir (Art&A), bibliothèque de la Goutte d'Or, urban anthropologist Virginie Milliot (Université Paris Nanterre), Collectif 4C and association Graine de Jardins, as well as Institut des Cultures d'Islam and les enfants de la Goutte d'Or.
