Discover the Buttes-aux-cailles neighborhood, whose history can be read in the names of its streets and public buildings. A guided tour offered by the Comité d'histoire de la Ville de Paris.
As in Montmartre, the hill of Butte-aux-Cailles was once covered with vineyards and meadows. It was also crossed by the Bièvre, whose banks became home to the Gobelins manufactory and then to many small workshops, including dye works and tanneries. Its landscape was gradually transformed during the Industrial Revolution. But because of the many quarries, which made it difficult to lay solid foundations for large buildings, Butte-aux-Cailles partly escaped the major Haussmann works of the mid-19th century. It long remained a working-class neighborhood, with modest small buildings whose courtyards were often occupied by small businesses. Today, Butte-aux-Cailles still preserves traces of this agricultural and industrial past, reflected in the names of its streets and public buildings, including rue du Moulin-des-Prés, which runs alongside the swimming pool to the east. This guided tour is offered by the Comité d'histoire de la Ville de Paris. A dedicated digital route, highlighting the history and heritage of this neighborhood in the 13th arrondissement, was created by the Département de l'histoire, de la mémoire et des musées associatifs (Direction des affaires culturelles) as part of the Ville de Paris participatory budget.
