Discover the history of rue Nationale, once one of the busiest shopping streets in the 13th arrondissement. A guided tour offered by the Comité d'histoire de la Ville de Paris.
In the early 20th century, walking up rue Nationale, you could still come across three ragpickers’ settlements, as well as a meadow where a few cows grazed. Over time, many dilapidated buildings became unsanitary, especially the Deux-Moulins block between Boulevard Vincent-Auriol and rues Nationale, Jeanne-d’Arc and Clisson. These run-down homes had no toilets or showers. Beyond the necessary renovations, many urban planning projects in the 1960s and 1970s helped reshape the neighborhood’s landscape. Today, while almost nothing remains of what rue Nationale once was, walking along it offers a chance to discover part of its history. This guided tour is offered by the Comité d'histoire de la Ville de Paris. A dedicated digital route, highlighting the history and heritage of several neighborhoods in the 13th arrondissement, was created by the Département de l'histoire, de la mémoire et des musées associatifs (Direction des affaires culturelles) as part of the Ville de Paris participatory budget.
