[Lecture] What exactly is a river? Simply flowing water… or something more? A river carries more than water: it transports matter, both visible and invisible—particles and dissolved elements. But where does this matter come from? And what can it tell us about continents and the interactions between rocks, the atmosphere, and living organisms? These flows reveal the formation of soils, the erosion and transformation of continents, as well as the impact of human societies in the age of the Capitalocene. Looking at a river differently means learning to read these processes within it. This is what we will explore together during this lecture. Studying the composition of a river means understanding how the Earth's surface is shaped. This scientific lecture for ages 15 and over will be presented by Soufian Henchiri, who holds a doctorate in geochemistry and is a geoscience educator at the Palais de la Découverte.
