A discussion with two economists to understand an issue that affects us all: inflation. Food, energy, housing—the “French household budget” is a hot-button issue at the heart of political debate. So, where do things stand? What explains this rise in prices? How does it affect our daily lives?
The publication of the book Inflation, la grande arnaque (éd. Les échappés, 2025) sparked the idea of holding a discussion on a lasting economic phenomenon: inflation. Since economic talks in libraries are rare, this is an excellent opportunity to explore—in an accessible way—an issue that affects every level of society, though not equally. Moderated by André Loez of Le Monde des livres, this discussion between two economists will provide a clear overview of inflation’s impact on household budgets while offering a broader analysis of the phenomenon. Gilles Raveaud teaches economic policy, the euro, public services and social policies in Europe at the Institut d’Études Européennes de l’Université Paris 8 Saint-Denis. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at université Harvard (États-Unis) from 2005 to 2007. At éditions Dargaud, Gilles Raveaud is the author of the graphic novel La bourse et la vie, published in April 2026. Jonathan Marie is a Professor of Economics at IHEAL-Creda, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle and a member of the Les Économistes atterrés collective. His research focuses on macroeconomics and is structured around two main themes: the study of inflationary dynamics and episodes of hyperinflation, and the effectiveness of contemporary macroeconomic policies. He is currently editor-in-chief of La Revue de la régulation. Jonathan Marie is also the co-author of Inflation : Qui perd ? Qui gagne ? Pourquoi ? Que faire ? (éd. Points, 2026). André Loez is a French historian specializing in the history of the First World War and the 19th century.
