À propos

Memories of a rural Jamaican community brought together by its sound system.

Between 1991 and 2025, I photographed everyday life in Deleon Bigwoods, a small village in the hills of Westmoreland, Jamaica. Every evening, a bar and grocery store became the beating heart of the community, centered around its sound system: “Prosperous.” These photographs capture both Reggae Dancehall and the memory of a rural world now undergoing profound change. I had never considered exhibiting them. The arrival of Hurricane Melissa in October 2025 changed everything. Several of the places featured in the photographs were destroyed. The exhibition brings together portraits and scenes from everyday life, set each evening to the rhythm of a massive, handcrafted sound system. Those wishing to continue this encounter can support local initiatives through Jah Works Experience, an organization that has long been committed to rural co-development in Jamaica. Stéphane Delphin
