“Enchantment” is an original musical performance by Isaías Alves, combining Afro-Maranhense and Indigenous rhythmic foundations with the contemporary language of Afro-diasporic jazz and post-modal structures. The work is the result of more than twenty years of research into Maranhão’s cultural traditions, including bumba meu boi, the Divino Espírito Santo festivities, and practices of Afro-Maranhense origin, reimagined through a contemporary instrumental language. (Lanna Luiza, journalist and cultural producer • human rights) A native of São Luís in northeastern Brazil, Isaías is a percussionist and composer steeped in Maranhão’s folk traditions. He grew up to the rhythm of street drums, processions, and festivities before taking his sounds all the way to Europe. With him, tradition meets improvisation, jazz takes root in the land, and rhythm becomes language. These #Meet… events are designed as a vibrant space—a place where musicians meet and experiment, where the pulse becomes a shared language, and where every evening can take an unexpected turn.
