A pictorial approach to aquatint Prerequisites: experience in intaglio printmaking and basic knowledge of etching and aquatint techniques.
Aquatint is an etching process used to produce wash-like effects on a metal plate by applying a grain of acid-resistant resin powder, creating different shades of gray depending on how long the plate is exposed to the acid. This workshop focuses on developing a deeper understanding of the various stages of the aquatint technique. Layering several successive transparent aquatints, each with different biting times, allows us to greatly expand the range of values from white to black, including every subtle shade of gray engraved on a single plate. This gradual exploration of deep, nuanced blacks in washes, characteristic of the aquatint technique, invites us to adopt a painterly, gestural approach while remaining firmly within the practice of printmaking. Materials: Each participant must bring a 20 x 30 cm copper plate and at least two projects (drawing or photograph) in the same format as the plate. Bear in mind that the image will be reversed when printed on paper. Remember to mirror your project accordingly. Finally, if you wish to keep your original drawing or photograph intact, make a copy, as you will need to draw on it to transfer your design to the plate.
