In dialogue with the Camille Vivier exhibition, the MEP invites you to a screening of the film "Narcisse Noir," a cult British film cited by the artist among her references, whose mystical atmosphere resonates with her work.
Narcisse Noir Directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger Based on the novel by Rumer Godden England, 1947, 100 min. OV (original English version) Narcisse Noir explores themes of solitude and desire in an atmosphere tinged with bold, colorful visual flair. The drama unfolds on the foothills of the Himalayas. A congregation of British nuns settles in a former harem to establish a dispensary. Soon, Deborah Kerr, in the role of Sister Clodagh, clashes with Mr Dean, an English agent who helps them build the school. Solitude weighs heavily on this grandiose landscape. Through their characters, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger explore the dramatic tension between spirituality and sensuality. In her photographs, Camille Vivier likewise creates a sensual and unsettling universe, where formal beauty illuminates a silent dreamlike quality. The artificiality of the film’s visuals resonates with Camille Vivier’s work: the film was shot entirely in the studio, under controlled lighting. Chromatic experimentation plays an important role thanks to the early use of Technicolor. This screening is part of a two-film cycle conceived in resonance with the Camille Vivier exhibition. The first screening, Faux-Semblants by David Cronenberg, is shown on June 25.
