A talk by architect Thibaut Houette, who holds a doctorate in biomimicry and biotechnology, on bio-inspired habitats
What if nature became our greatest ally in designing the architecture of tomorrow? Living systems offer both aesthetic and technical inspiration for creating sustainable, resilient, and regenerative habitats. Foundations inspired by tree root systems, mushroom-derived mycomaterials, weather-responsive façades that mimic pine cone scales… these innovations illustrate the wealth of solutions developed by nature over the course of evolution. In response to environmental challenges, particularly water management, bio-inspired habitats offer a new way of thinking about building design. Drawing on principles such as multifunctionality, adaptation, and nested scales, this approach seeks to better integrate the interactions between habitats, their environment, and the surrounding ecosystems. Thibaut Houette Thibaut Houette is an architect with a doctorate in biomimicry and biotechnology, as well as R&D&I and habitat project manager at the Centre d’études et d’expertises national en biomimétisme ( Ceebios ). A graduate of the École nationale supérieure d’architecture Paris-Val de Seine with a doctorate in integrated bioscience from The University of Akron, he has spent more than ten years advancing the integration of biomimicry into architectural design. After conducting a research project on biomimetic water management in architecture with the MAP-MAACC laboratory, he joined the Biomimicry Research and Innovation Center for his doctoral research on integrating biological growth into architecture through biomimicry and biotechnology. Passionate about the strategies of living systems, his projects span a wide range of scales, from mycelium-based materials to the abstraction of ecosystem services.
