A lecture by Anne Augereau, a prehistorian at Inrap, the French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research.
In A Prehistory of Women, Anne Augereau explores the role of women in prehistoric societies over the 300,000 years preceding the emergence of the first written civilizations. Drawing on all the archaeological evidence currently available for Europe and Western Asia, she offers a groundbreaking overview of relations between the sexes from the Middle Paleolithic to the Neolithic and examines a central question: did male domination already exist in prehistoric times? Childhood, marriage, motherhood, work, diet, health, mobility, and violence are among the themes that provide a better understanding of the living conditions of prehistoric women and men and offer fresh perspectives on the origins and forms of gender inequality.
