Current Affairs Thursdays: a conversation with Emilia Petrakis and Martin Page, moderated by Lauren Malka
Developing physical strength is generally associated with masculinity. With the rise of the masculinist movement, this celebration of strength may be viewed negatively by gender minorities, who see it as an expression of values considered violent or centered on self-worship. Strength training, in particular, may therefore be scorned or criticized, as it is sometimes associated with a glorification of physical dominance that can be perceived as threatening. How can we reclaim the concept of physical strength and turn it into a tool for self-confidence, pride, and empowerment? Speakers: > Martin Page writes novels and essays. In Douceur de la musculation (2025), he offers an unexpected perspective on strength training as a practice that allows us to care for ourselves and those close to us while protecting our vulnerability and gentleness. Strength training becomes a laboratory of resistance against what hurts and oppresses us. > Emilia Petrakis writes poetry and competes in amateur Mixed Martial Arts. With Bagarre (2026), her first novel, she offers a sensitive and energetic reflection on empowerment through sport, as well as a moving tribute—far removed from clichés—to a little-known community. A timely work about determination, solidarity, last chances, and first times. > Lauren Malka is an author, independent journalist, and podcaster. ; Credits: @le Nouvel Attila
