À propos

As part of Autumn of Science 2026, discover an exciting project focused on the Sentier district that explores a solution for living there in an era of global warming.

What if, in an era of global warming, people could stroll in the cool shade, sheltered from the sun, through a parallel pedestrian network running across vacant ground-floor spaces and building courtyards? This is the proposal that Juliette Galin—a young architect who graduated from the École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Paris-Malaquais in June 2025—will present at this conference. For her final-year project, she undertook extensive archival and drawing work, leading her to redraw every ground floor in the Sentier district. Entitled Éloge de la lenteur, dentelle urbaine au cœur du Sentier, this mapping and conceptual design project centers on using the maze of narrow streets, passageways, building courtyards, ground floors, and first basement levels—spaces left vacant by the Sentier’s former textile shops—to create an urban lacework protected from the heat that helps cool the area and circulate air. Created as a patchwork from documents held by the BnF, Gallica, and the Bibliothèque historique, this map recreates the district’s built-up spaces, open spaces, passageways, and thresholds as they appeared in the early 19th century, offering a detailed and unprecedented perspective on the Sentier.
