Many artists crossed paths in Montmartre in the early 20th century. Paul Cézanne, a painter from Aix, developed his artistic identity apart from his contemporaries. Yet his retrospective at the Grand Palais following his death in 1906 caused a sensation. A solitary outsider who was heavily criticized during his lifetime, he was nevertheless revered by the new generation. What lessons would the future giants of modern art—Matisse, Braque, Delaunay, Kandinsky, Duchamp and Mondrian—draw from his work?
How can encounters between artists give rise to a new artistic movement? Why is the cross-pollination of ideas and influences so important to the creative process? Featuring: Efflam, a young painter and art educator. Efflam produces educational videos on Youtube. In 2025, he began a video series about the year 1911: around ten episodes exploring the diversity of creative work and the blending of artistic influences. Immersed in art history since his first museum visits, he continued his art education at the université de Rennes between 2017 and 2022. With a Master’s degree in Fine Arts, Efflam enjoys weaving references to other artists into his paintings and digital collages. This event is presented in conjunction with the Cézanne et nous exhibition at the Grand Palais, running from September 23, 2026, to January 17, 2027.
