Through the vibrant energy of dance, two great artists confront history with conviction.
At 82, Germaine Acogny is a phenomenon. The former “spiritual daughter” of Maurice Béjart retraces the life and struggles of the celebrated Joséphine Baker: her rebellion against racism, her involvement in the Resistance… Their encounter feels so inevitable that it has been met with triumph everywhere. Gregory Maqoma responds with a work for twelve dancers from different traditions, bringing their practices together in a joyful spirit of fellowship that pays tribute to Germaine Acogny’s teaching and her renowned École des sables. An age-old echo of Africa, its youth and modernity, a whirlwind of elemental energy moving at a breakneck pace, Bantu is a celebration of the strength and beauty of life. Gregory Maqoma also highlights the continent’s social realities. And, in keeping with Joséphine’s ideal, he succeeds in bringing the dream of a universal humanity to life. Thomas Hahn
