When Tatiana and her sister Andra were deported from Italy to Auschwitz-Birkenau in April 1944, along with their mother and other family members, they were only 6 and 4 years old.
While nearly all Jewish children were murdered in the gas chambers when the transports arrived, their survival, historian Laura Fontana writes, is “a mystery about which researchers can only formulate hypotheses.” For 20 years, Tatiana and Andra Bucci have traveled throughout Italy to share their testimony in schools. For more than 20 years, she worked tirelessly to teach and preserve the history of the Shoah. As the Mémorial de la Shoah’s representative for Italy, she organized extensive programs of conferences and teacher-training courses, as well as touring numerous exhibitions.
