Critical edition prepared by Karen Taieb and Géraldine Muhlmann. Les Belles Lettres, 2026.
In February 1945, a letter written in French by a member of the Sonderkommando and addressed by a certain Hermann to his wife and daughter was found in the ruins of a crematorium at Auschwitz-Birkenau. For decades, this unique testimony by a French Sonderkommando member was mistakenly attributed to a man named Chaïm Hermann. In 2018, Karen Taieb, head of the archives at the Mémorial de la Shoah, discovered the author’s true identity: Hersz Strasfogel. This book presents the letter in a previously unpublished edition, traces its history, and offers various analyses that shed light on this major document. With the book’s editors and historian Tal Bruttmann. In conversation with author and publisher Bertrand Richard. BOOK NOW
