How can fear be conveyed in a graphic novel? How can this narrative art form create a sense of dread? Through the pages of Deryn Du, Guillaume Sorel offers answers to these questions. In the album Deryn Du, Guillaume Sorel explores the strange events affecting a village in Pays de Galles. Far from the gray English moors of 19th-century Gothic novels, the landscape here is bright and lush. The story's tension builds with each passing day as the hero tries to uncover the horrors that occurred during the night. To guide readers through the story's tightly controlled pace, Guillaume Sorel constantly reinvents the composition of his pages, shifting from large, contemplative panels to sequences of smaller ones that punctuate the characters' movements and emotions. Guillaume Sorel thus reveals a cinematic approach to composition that serves the story and keeps readers on the edge of their seats. A passionate film enthusiast, Guillaume Sorel has also created a series of illustrations paying tribute to the work of David Lynch, and he will present several of the originals at this exhibition. Closing reception with the artist on Saturday, September 12, from 5 p.m. ABOUT GUILLAUME SOREL Born in Cherbourg, Guillaume Sorel discovered the world of graphic novels at an early age. His passion for drawing led him to complete a BEP in civil engineering before enrolling at the école d’Arts Appliqués de Lyon and then the Beaux-Arts de Paris. He produced his first professional illustrations for role-playing game companies and created his first cover for Presse Pocket in 1991. That same year, he made his debut in the world of graphic novels with L’Ile des Morts and series such as Mens Magna and Typhaon. A literature enthusiast, he went on to adapt Le Horla and Macbeth Roi d’Ecosse in the 2010s. Deryn Du is his latest album, published by Dupuis. He is currently working on a new adaptation of the novel Malpertuis.
