A conversational conference presented by the Agence quand les livres relient and the Médiathèque Françoise Sagan / fonds patrimonial Heure Joyeuse, as part of the Chantier-forum albums project, a collective reflection on children’s picture books and how they are read. "All-picture albums", or "wordless picture books": these illustrated books move, unsettle, and challenge us. How should we read them with a child? Can they be narrated aloud? How do children read them, alone or with someone else? Why do they always seem more difficult to introduce to adults—early-childhood or cultural-engagement professionals and parents—during shared reading sessions, whether in libraries or other settings? And how should they even be shelved? What different reading skills do they involve, particularly when it comes to interpreting images? Can they only be defined by contrast with picture books that create interactions between text and image? We will explore all these questions through a selection of past and present picture books drawn from the collections of the fonds patrimonial Heure Joyeuse, as well as in conversation with Anne-Margot Ramstein, an artist and author of picture books both with and without text. Born on the island of La Réunion, Anne-Margot Rammstein moved to mainland France after completing her baccalauréat, studying graphic arts in Paris before joining the Arts décoratifs de Strasbourg, where she graduated in 2009. In the illustration studio, she developed a fondness for hidden images, optical illusions, and other playful variations that later appeared in both her commissioned work and personal projects. She was a resident at the Villa Médicis de Rome as part of the 2015–2016 cohort. She began her career in children’s publishing with several books. At the same time, Anne-Margot Ramstein regularly brings her talent to prestigious commissions for Hermès, le Monde, Le Tigre, Elle, Libération, XXI… She has exhibited her drawings in Boston and Philadelphia in the United States, as well as on the island of La Réunion.
