Their duo project, Raices en Acuerdo, celebrates their roots. The Cuban-born saxophonist and Argentine-born pianist draw on their respective musical heritages. Whether performing « Drume negrita », a Cuban children’s song, « Llora », « Cartas de amor que se queman » or « La trunca norte », immortalized by Mercedes Sosa—Cuban songs steeped in gentle nostalgia that tell of love’s joys and disappointments and pierce the heart—or « Soledad », a nocturne bathed in the dark glow of melancholy by tango master Astor Piazzolla, Ricardo Izquierdo and Sergio Gruz have chosen to capture the spirit rather than follow the letter in their reinterpretations.
