How does one become a man? Or, more precisely: how does one become a man without being confined by models of virility, domination, and performance that continue to shape our collective imagination? With “La Tendresse,” Julie Berès creates a space for performance and dialogue where young men recount, confront, and challenge the expectations of masculinity.
Drawing on personal accounts, intimate experiences, and performative, choreographic stage writing, the show blends direct addresses, storytelling, dance, and collective energy to give voice to lives marked by the contradictions of our time. Family, sexuality, heritage, violence, desire, vulnerability: these sensitive areas are explored without didacticism, but with intensity, humor, and candor. On stage, bodies speak as powerfully as words. The group becomes a chorus, a confrontation, a source of support, and a space for self-exposure. Through this movement, La Tendresse does not seek to define “the man of today,” but to open up new possibilities: other ways of inhabiting one’s place, loving, connecting with others, and escaping the archetypes that may have shaped our collective imagination. Rejecting caricature, Julie Berès crafts a vibrant, political, and deeply moving play that questions not so much a fixed identity as the possibility of transformation. It is a way of shifting the boundaries of patriarchy and turning the stage into a place of questioning and reinvention—one that gives us grounds for hope.
