À propos

In response to the "Vive la mariée !" exhibition, the Arab World Institute is organizing a series of roundtables addressing the social, cultural, and contemporary issues of marriage in the Arab world.

In many Arab societies, marriage involves a family's status, reputation, and social standing. The dress, the venue, the number of guests, and the dowry become so many social markers. In Algeria, doors sometimes remain open to the entire village; in Egypt, some families go into debt to prepare the dowry; in the Comoros, a grand wedding can mobilize a lifetime of savings. This staging of marriage contributes to social recognition and group belonging. With: Rim Affaya, anthropologist, postdoctoral researcher at Aix-Marseille University and research fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University Maissane Al Ibrahimi, Franco-Moroccan visual artist. Moderation: Karine Marazyan, economics lecturer and researcher at the University of Rouen Normandy.

Sunday, October 11 at 3 PM. Free admission with reservation. High Council Hall (Level 9)
