A thousand years after the publication of Avicenna’s (Ibn Sînâ, 980-1037) Book of Healing (Kitâb al-Shifâ’), Falsafa—the IMA’s Arabic philosophy event series—is dedicating its 2026-2027 season to this monumental work. Logic, physics, mathematics, metaphysics: each event will explore a different facet of one of the most ambitious and influential texts in intellectual history, both in Islam and beyond
Avicenna’s theory of prophecy is a key element of the Kitāb al-Shifāʾ. This talk examines how it was received by contemporary Pakistani thinker Fazlur Rahman (1919-1988), who drew on it to make the phenomenon of revelation intelligible to the modern rational mind. Featuring: Hazem Al Rahmany, a postdoctoral researcher at Aix-Marseille Université. His research focuses on contemporary Quranic hermeneutics and the voices of the new theology in Islam. The Falsafa events are coordinated and hosted by Jean-Baptiste Brenet, a medievalist, professor of Arabic philosophy at Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, agrégé in philosophy and a graduate of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (religious sciences section).
