The MEP presents “The Time of an Image,” a new series of talks held on the first Thursday of every month starting in September. Hosted by journalist Arnaud Laporte, each event invites a notable guest to choose an image that stays with them, unsettles them, or fuels their imagination, and to explore its many resonances over the course of a forty-five-minute conversation.
For this inaugural event, writer Laurent Mauvignier has chosen Tereska (1948), one of David Seymour’s (Chim) most famous portraits. Taken in a home for children traumatized by World War II, this photograph of a little girl with a distant gaze has become an iconic image of childhood trauma and the memory of conflict. The author of a major body of work and winner of the 2025 Prix Goncourt, Laurent Mauvignier has spent more than twenty-five years exploring questions of memory, violence, and intimacy. This image, which he says he knows “by heart” and which has long “haunted” him, will serve as the starting point for a conversation with Arnaud Laporte. The talk will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.
