As part of the “William Klein: Films, etc.” retrospective, this screening invites you to discover—or rediscover—William Klein’s film “Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?”
Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? 98 minutes, 1966 Directed by William Klein Film screened in 35mm In the fictional Who Are You? television series, Polly Maggoo is a mock portrait of a top model. In this first feature film, William Klein has fun creating a fake documentary, infused with the devastating satirical humor for which he is known. Polly, the central character played by model Dorothy McGowan, becomes the object of desire and ambition for the small circle of schemers inhabiting the worlds of fashion and media. Klein, who had just walked away from French television and would soon stop working for Vogue, also uses the film to settle scores with these circles he knew so well. His targets include a society-page celebrity and her snobbish followers, television journalists (Philippe Noiret and Jean Rochefort), the prince ruling over a make-believe kingdom who wants to marry Polly, and the designer of unwearable metal dresses… Several real-life personalities of the time must quite rightly have felt targeted by the film’s caricatures. Although visually rooted in the excitement of the sixties, the film remains as relevant and biting as ever today.
