What does it mean to build in a desert without altering its natural character? How can comfort and innovation be created without threatening fragile ecosystems? How can visitors be welcomed while respecting local rhythms, knowledge, and resources?
To explore answers to these questions, the Royal Commission for AlUla and AFALULA created an art and design residency five years ago. Since 2021, five artists and designers have been invited each year to take part in a three-month research and experimentation residency in AlUla, followed by a production phase during which they develop projects inspired by local expertise, materials, landscapes, and the history of the place. AlUla is undergoing rapid transformation, and the way the oasis evolves is crucial. Design is one of the most tangible ways this transformation takes shape, whether through public spaces, product design, or craftsmanship. In this context, the residencies bridge the gap between research and production. This spotlight on AlUla for the Arab Design Award traces the entire creative process, from the first sketches and models to prototypes and, in some cases, the commercial production of the object.
