Some decisions resemble declarations of war. The decision to dismiss Olivier Nora, director of the publishing house Grasset, in April 2026 is one such decision. In the cultural battle that has already begun, writers are resisting.
Faced with authoritarianism in all its forms, they are resisting with their greatest weapon: the written word. The collective is making its presence felt. Eighty women and men writers have decided to tell, each in their own way, the story of this power grab, what this decision represents, what it entails, and the danger it heralds. Forced to acknowledge the vulnerability of their status, they are also taking action to change it and restore balance to their relationships with publishers. From an apartment kitchen to the gilded halls of the Sénat, from the hubbub of a café to a theater stage, this book moves between the personal and the collective, words and drawings, forging a new and vibrant literary identity that neither ideology nor top-down arbitrariness will be able to silence. It also reminds us that in French, only one letter separates “livre” (book) from “libre” (free). Edited by Anne Berest, Virginie Despentes, Laure Limongi, Tania de Montaigne, Colombe Schneck and Vanessa Springora, this work brings together dozens of authors who unite their voices to reject the ideological takeover of literary creation and publishing. It is in this same spirit of defending creative freedom, debate, and a plurality of voices that La Grande Évasion will be presented at Théâtre de la Concorde. This mobilization fully reflects the venue’s mission: to make theater a space for freedom, dialogue, and empowerment, where voices can engage with one another, express themselves, and continue to build society together.
