Winter is long in Lille, and as soon as the first rays of sun break through, everyone starts looking for open air. You do not need a car to find space. The metro area has green lungs you can reach directly from the city center or with a short tram or train ride. Here is my selection of places to lay down a towel or have a picnic, tested and approved by locals.

Les Prés du Hem

Les Prés du Hem Les Prés du Hem, 150 Rue des Résistants, 59280 Armentières Google rating: 4.2/5 (2418 reviews) View on Maps This is unquestionably the "beach" for people from Lille. Located in Armentières, this leisure center has a supervised lake in summer with a real fine-sand beach. It is ideal for swimming or sunbathing without leaving the region. The atmosphere is family-friendly and relaxed, though it can get crowded on sunny July days.

Cita-Parc

Cita-Parc Cita-Parc, Av. Mathias Delobel, 59800 Lille Google rating: 4.1/5 (2471 reviews) View on Maps Located right next to Zénith, this urban amusement park is perfect for a fun outing. You will find rides for all ages and play areas. It is a good compromise if you want to combine a walk with a few small thrills without going far from the center. Access is easy from Canteleu metro station.

With its tall century-old trees and paths lined with canals, it is a favorite spot for joggers and families having a picnic. Entering through the porte royale is spectacular. It is free, open all day, and always pleasant, whatever the season.

Mosaïc, le jardin des Cultures

Mosaïc, le jardin des Cultures Mosaïc, le jardin des Cultures, 103 Rue Guy Môquet, 59263 Houplin-Ancoisne Google rating: 4.6/5 (2480 reviews) View on Maps This themed park in Houplin-Ancoisne is an underrated gem. It features different gardens inspired by cultures from around the world (Japanese, Mediterranean, and more). Its high 4.6/5 rating reflects how well maintained and peaceful the place is. It is perfect for a contemplative walk away from the noise of the city.

Gulli Parc Lille - Lomme

Gulli Parc Lille - Lomme Gulli Parc Lille - Lomme, 12 Rue du Château d'Isenghien, 59160 Lille Google rating: 4.2/5 (2280 reviews) View on Maps For families with children, this event park is a reliable choice. Located in Lomme, it offers varied activities and secure play areas. It is an indoor venue that requires a ticket, but the organization is efficient. Ideal for keeping children occupied for an entire afternoon under supervision.

Étang du Parc Urbain de Lomme

Étang du Parc Urbain de Lomme Étang du Parc Urbain de Lomme, 12 Rue du Château d'Isenghien, 59160 Lille Google rating: 4.2/5 (461 reviews) View on Maps Very close to Gulli Parc, this pond offers a more natural, wilder setting. It is a popular spot for birdwatching or simply enjoying the water’s edge. Opening hours are limited (usually until 5 or 6 p.m.), so make sure to check before heading there late in the day.

Practical tips

To reach these places, the Ilevia network is your best friend. From Lille Flandres (Pl. de la Gare, 59800 Lille, Rating: 3.9/5) or Lille Europe (1 Place François Mitterrand, 59777 Euralille, Rating: 3.5/5), take tram T2 or T3 to Lomme, or a TER train to Armentières. The stations are well connected.

Local tip: opening hours vary by season. Les Prés du Hem and Mosaïc often close on Mondays and Tuesdays, and open around 10 a.m. on other days. Parc de la Citadelle is freely accessible. Book your train tickets to Armentières in advance during heat waves, as trains can fill up.
