Montpellier celebrates 10 years of the Sign Union Flag! From September 16-20, 2026, Montpellier will host the JMS Montpellier 2026, an exceptional event dedicated to the French Sign Language (LSF) and deaf culture. This edition holds special significance: it will celebrate 10 years since the official first hoisting of the Sign Union Flag. In 2016, Montpellier became the first city in the world to officially raise this flag, a symbol of sign language, deaf culture, and recognition of the linguistic rights of deaf people. For five days, the city will come alive with a rich program open to all. Residents, visitors, the curious, families, deaf and hearing people will be able to share moments of discovery, exchange, and conviviality around numerous activities. On the program: opening ceremony, raising of the Sign Union Flag, conferences, performances, workshops introducing the French Sign Language, guided tours in sign language, banquet, as well as the "Light of the Deaf" exhibition at the Cité des Arts. Beyond the celebration, JMS Montpellier 2026 aims to raise public awareness of the French Sign Language and deaf culture, promote a more inclusive and accessible society, and highlight the richness of exchanges between deaf and hearing people.
