The all-female supergroup Les Amazones d’Afrique campaigns for gender equality and an end to long-standing violence against women. Their voice? Modern, uplifting music blending influences from traditional West African music, trap and electronic music. The collective was formed in 2014 by Malian stars and activists Mamani Keita, Oumou Sangaré and Mariam Doumbia. It quickly welcomed new faces and different languages. Audiences fell under the spell of this modern, socially conscious Pan-African music—including Barack Obama, who featured a track from République Amazone among his favorites of 2017. Over the years, the message has remained the same—to defend the rights of women and girls—but the collective has evolved: the high-energy Musow Danse (2024) showcases a younger generation of singers and a refreshed sound, creating a pop melting pot infused with electronic influences.
