European Archaeology Days: a lecture by Catalin Pavel
Why are nine dogs resting in a baboon tomb? And what are sheep, bulls, sparrowhawks, and fish doing alongside a cremated Viking? Did Caligula really want to make his horse consul? Spanning prehistory to Antiquity, archaeologist Cătălin Pavel draws on thousands of excavations to explore the deep and often unexpected bonds between humans and animals. Bears shaped from amber or marble, hedgehog mandibles placed in graves: the uncovering of sacrificial practices and the discovery of bones and other artifacts testify to an intimate and highly symbolic relationship. Through a fascinating investigation, the author offers a lively and learned portrait of a wide range of species and reveals how animals, whether domestic or wild, played a catalytic role in the cognitive, emotional, and social development of Homo sapiens. Please note: due to work at bibliothèque Mohammed Arkoun, the lecture has been moved to bibliothèque L'Heure J oyeu se , 6-12 rue des Prêtres Saint-Séverin 75005 Paris (Métro/RER/Bus Cluny-Sorbonne or Saint-Michel) Reservation recommended: 01 80 05 47 60 / [email protected]
