Invented in 1842 by scientist John Herschel, cyanotype is one of the earliest photographic techniques in history. Through exposure to light, this process produces works in a unique, intense shade of blue. Botanist Anna Atkins was the first to recognize its aesthetic potential, using it to preserve images of her collections of algae and ferns — thereby producing what is considered the first book illustrated with photographs. Long associated with technical applications, particularly architectural and engineering "blueprints," it gradually found its place in the art world. Although cyanotype remains underrepresented in artistic and craft training programs today, it is attracting growing interest, particularly among contemporary photographers. To coincide with the exhibition dedicated to François Kollar, a photographer of the 1930s and creator of La France Travaille, this cyanotype workshop invites participants to explore the connection between material, gesture, and image. To personalize your work, feel free to bring flat objects you would like to reproduce: lace, thread, a needle, a small stencil, etc. - Workshop facilitator Mathilde Pinon is an art historian who moved into cultural and artistic outreach before turning to cyanotype practice in recent years.
