As part of the “William Klein: Films, etc.” retrospective, this screening invites you to discover the film “Cité des Chênes : Le Royal.”

The film will be preceded by a selection of 17 commercials directed by William Klein for various advertisers, including Dim, Yves Saint-Laurent, Le Bourget, Lux, Fabergé, Kelton, Renault, la Pie qui Chante… Klein made a great many commercials, which allowed him to finance his projects. Cité des Chênes : Le Royal Alternative title: Le café, microcosme de la cité 52 minutes, 1974 This film by William Klein is being screened for the first time. A rediscovered film in a 52-minute television format, it was made at the invitation of the program “cinéastes témoins de leur temps” and broadcast on television on September 2, 1974. Within William Klein’s cinema, this documentary is close to his “sociological vein,” already present in his film Aux grands magasins. The film questions the mass expansion of housing and consumer culture, concerns that would later reappear in the comedy Le Couple Témoin. The year is 1974, and housing estates promising modern comfort are springing up in the new towns. Here in Ermont, Cité des Chênes is still being delivered, but it already appears proudly on postcards. At Le Royal, the café-bar-PMU, Klein brings his camera face to face with the residents, gathering many reflections on the city, urban planning, work, and money. The estate may be new, but as an ideal way of life, the cracks are already showing: “All the playgrounds, the missing infrastructure, they need to be built, and this mindset of profit at any cost needs to be abandoned. They build as high as possible, as tightly packed as possible, but it’s boring as hell in there!”

Price: From 0 to 14 euros.
