A prosperous Sephardic Jewish family from Istanbul, the Camondo family settled in Paris in 1870. Moïse and his cousin Isaac became major collectors of art and precious objects. After his untimely death in 1911, Isaac bequeathed more than 850 works to the Louvre, while Moïse donated his impressive collection to France following the death of his son, Nissim, during the First World War. The family’s last descendants were murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Their Parisian residence at 63 rue de Monceau, now the musée Nissim de Camondo, stands today as a silent witness to this tragic history, embodying the memory of a family that disappeared.
