During European Heritage Days, Beethoven’s “Serenade,” performed by the company Les Folies du temps, offers a timeless moment where sculpture and music meet, echoing Bourdelle’s admiration for Beethoven.

Antoine Bourdelle deeply admired Ludwig van Beethoven, an embodiment of Romantic genius whose commitment and creative power he celebrated. For European Heritage Days, Les Folies du temps will perform Serenade, Op. 8 (1796), an early work by the composer that still bears the hallmarks of the Classical tradition, with the violin, viola and cello engaging as equals in an interplay of variations and contrasts. The program also includes an Aubade for flute and string trio by François Devienne, revealing the influence of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn, as in Beethoven’s work. Performers: Dalhia Adamopoulos (viola), Jean-Christophe Marq (cello), Sylvie Pascal (flute), Alain Pégeot (violin) Free admission, subject to availability Les Folies du temps In 2009, Sylvie Pascal, Jean-Christophe Marq and Olivier Dejours brought together their experience, tastes and aspirations to create Les Folies du temps. From the outset, they chose to focus the company’s work on the relationship between music and theater: chamber operas, melodramas, staged concerts… highlighting the importance of dramaturgy in music, even when it is purely instrumental. Since then, they have created several operas ( Didon et Énée , Orlando furioso, Le Combat de Tancrède et Clorinde …), staged concerts ( La Passion selon St-Jean , Jean-Sébastien Bach entre mesure et démesure), melodramas ( Le Chant du cavalier bleu , Onomata , Sept paroles ), and shows for young audiences ( Ulysse , Proserpine , Phaéton ). The musicians of Les Folies du temps perform on period or “modern” instruments according to the requirements of the works they interpret (from the 17th century to the present day). A taste for whimsy and a touch of madness unite the company’s musicians and singers, along with a desire to bring so-called “early” music into the present and to perform contemporary works with an understanding of the works that preceded them.
