À propos

In conjunction with the exhibition “Photography in Every Sense of the Word,” the MEP invites you to a roundtable exploring the fertile connections between photography and text, showing how images and words respond to, extend, and enrich one another.

Inspired by John Berger’s Ways of Seeing (1972), the exhibition Photography in Every Sense of the Word draws on this seminal work’s idea that “seeing comes before words”: we perceive reality before naming and conceptualizing it. This event will bring together artists and specialists whose practices lie at the intersection of photography, writing, and publishing. Photographer and editor Francesca Todde, whose book IUZZA explores the imaginary world of Goliarda Sapienza, an Italian writer whose work has been rediscovered internationally in recent years, will be in conversation with Nicholas Muellner, an artist, writer, and teacher whose practice lies at the intersection of photography and writing, exploring the limits of photography as a documentary practice and its dialogue with literary, political, and personal narratives. The discussion will be moderated by Federica Chiocchetti, a specialist in the history of photography and literature. Together, the panelists will examine the many forms that the dialogue between photography and literature can take. Drawing on their respective practices, they will consider the role of text in photography, the book as a creative space, and the narratives that images evoke or extend.

Price: €0 to €14.
