The MEP continues its new series of events, “The Time of an Image,” held on the first Thursday of every month. Hosted by journalist Arnaud Laporte, each event invites a guest to choose an image that stays with them, unsettles them, or fuels their imagination, and to explore its many resonances during a forty-five-minute conversation.
For this second event, guest Phil Casoar, a journalist and author, has chosen a photograph that became one of the iconic images of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Published in Paris Match, this famous photograph depicts a young couple of insurgents in the streets of Budapest, whose identities, fate, and even the circumstances in which the picture was taken remained a mystery for many years. Phil Casoar placed this image at the heart of an investigation conducted over several years with historian Eszter Balazs, which led to the book Les Héros de Budapest, published by Les Arènes in 2006. Republished this autumn 2026 by La Table Ronde in an expanded edition titled Budapest 56 : L’envers d’une photo, the book traces the two authors’ quest to find the people featured in this photograph, which became an icon of photojournalism and the 1956 Hungarian uprising. Phil Casoar has long been interested in images, how they are created, and the stories they may conceal. Together with Arnaud Laporte, he will revisit this now-legendary photograph: how does an image enter history? What remains behind an icon? And what can a photograph still reveal when we set out to rediscover its subjects and context? A conversation centered on an image, but also on the investigation that restores its story and its faces. The event will be followed by a discussion with the audience and then, at 8 p.m., a book signing at the MEP bookshop.
