Voter registration: changes starting July 2026 Published on June 18, 2026 - Service Public / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
Are you planning to register on the electoral rolls? Starting July 1, 2026, a decree modifies certain rules, particularly the deadline for completing this procedure before an election. Service Public informs you of the procedures to know ahead of the next election.

Currently, if you are not registered on the electoral rolls and wish to vote, your registration application must be submitted:
-
no later than the 6th Friday preceding the poll, if you go to the town hall;
-
no later than the 6th Wednesday preceding the poll if you apply online.
As of July 1, 2026, the rules will be unified, as provided for by a decree of June 12, 2026.
Whether you apply at the town hall or online, the deadline for registration will now be the same: the 6th Friday preceding the poll.
This measure aims to facilitate the management of electoral rolls for municipalities.
The decree of June 12, 2026 introduces other amendments to the Electoral Code. It implements a provision from the law of June 13, 2024, designed to protect individuals holding a protection order issued by the family court judge. It enforces "the masking of the addresses of beneficiaries of a protection order or an immediate protection order when electoral rolls are communicated." The address of the person concerned must now be "masked" in the electoral roll accessible to third parties. As a reminder, the Electoral Code allows any voter to access the electoral roll.
The address masking information must be recorded in the Unique Electoral Register (REU) of personal data managed by Insee (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies). Among the data collected for the REU will also now be decisions depriving individuals of voting rights.
