Two obesity medications reimbursed starting June 15 Published on June 1, 2026 - Service Public / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
Starting June 15, two medications designed to reduce obesity will be reimbursed by Health Insurance under controlled conditions. This measure was recently confirmed by several orders published in the Official Journal on May 28, 2026. It responds to recommendations from the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS), given that in 2025, 17.4% of adults in France were living with obesity. Who is eligible for coverage? Service Public provides information.

The two pharmacological treatments for obesity (TMO) Wegovy and Mounjaro will be covered by Health Insurance starting June 15, 2026, under certain conditions. These injectable treatments, initially developed for diabetes, are GLP-1 analogues, a class of medications that slow digestion and increase feelings of satiety.
These medications have been available in France since 2024 and are dispensed by prescription at a price set by the laboratory, without reimbursement by Health Insurance.
Which patients are eligible for coverage? Patients eligible for reimbursement of these treatments are those eligible for bariatric surgery (surgery aimed at achieving significant weight loss through modifications to the digestive tract). This includes:
-
individuals with a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 40 (morbid obesity) without comorbidity: titleContent;
-
individuals with a BMI equal to or greater than 35 (severe obesity) with comorbidity.
This type of treatment can only be prescribed as a second-line option, following failure of nutritional management (i.e., a weight loss of 5% of total body weight after 6 months). It must be used in conjunction with a hypocaloric diet and increased physical activity.
Who must prescribe this type of medication for it to be reimbursed? The initial prescription of the medication is reserved for professionals and structures involved in obesity care at referral levels 2 and 3: doctors practicing in specialized obesity centers (CSO); university hospital centers (CHU); medical and rehabilitation care establishments (SMR) specializing in gastroenterology, endocrinology, diabetology, and nutrition; endocrinologists working in connection with a CSO.
What financial coverage applies?
The insured person's co-payment rate is set at 35%, meaning 65% coverage by Health Insurance. The possibility of full coverage must be verified on a case-by-case basis, depending on the insured person's status, any long-term illness (ALD), applicable exemptions, and possession of complementary health insurance.
The two medications can still be prescribed by a general practitioner or specialist without reimbursement by Health Insurance. The prescription must comply with the eligibility criteria defined by the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM): BMI greater than or equal to 27 associated with a weight-related comorbidity; or BMI greater than or equal to 30, in addition to therapeutic lifestyle modifications.
