While the social advances born of the Popular Front are well known, its plans and achievements in the field of sport are often overlooked. Yet the combined efforts of Léo Lagrange and Jean Zay led to far-reaching reform initiatives aimed at making sports more accessible within community, workers' and school settings. In response to totalitarian states exploiting major international competitions for political purposes, an attempt was made to bring greater integrity to spectator sports within a democratic framework.
