On the occasion of the Journées Européennes du Patrimoine et du Matrimoine
Discover Harvesters and Birdsong, a harpsichord recital presented in connection with the exhibition Trésors de Laine et de Soie - les tapisseries de Guillaume Werniers & Catherine Ghuys à Lille au 18e siècle, on display at the Hospice Comtesse ( learn more ). In the eighteenth century, following in the footsteps of François Couperin, harpsichord music evolved from dance suites to character pieces and musical portraits. Concise and sharply drawn, these musical evocations portray real or allegorical figures and emotions, as well as fully fledged scenes. Nature and the countryside are far from absent in these musical worlds: birds, harvesters, shepherds, and their musettes are recurring themes. These harpsichord pieces are to music what the Tenières are to tapestries, offering a perfect musical illustration of them. As a counterpoint to the exhibition of tapestries by Guillaume Werniers and Catherine Ghuys, they bring to life the sounds of nature, scenes of everyday life, and village festivities, magnified and idealized in the minds of painters and composers alike. Program: Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). Suite in E minor from the 1724 book François Couperin (1668-1733). 6th ordre – 2nd book of harpsichord pieces – 1717 Louis-Claude Daquin (1694-1772). 3rd Suite from the 1st Book of Harpsichord Pieces – 1735 (excerpts) Jean-Philippe Rameau.
