In partnership with AFPS34, Gaza Urgence Déplacé·e·s, the Tsedek ! collective, and the Décolonial Film Festival. ----- « "Lyd" is a documentary and science fiction feature film that shares the multiple pasts, presents, and futures of the city of Lyd in Palestine/Israel. From the perspective of the city itself, embodied by Palestinian actress Maisa Abd Elhadi, the viewer is guided through the life of a five-thousand-year-old city, encountering its inhabitants. Lyd was once a prosperous Palestinian city with a rich history. In 636, it was even considered the first capital of Palestine. When the State of Israel was founded in 1948, Lyd became an Israeli city: Lod. Hundreds of Palestinian inhabitants of Lyd were massacred by Israeli forces, and most of the city's 50,000 Palestinian inhabitants were exiled. Today, the city has an Israeli Jewish majority and a Palestinian minority, and it is disinvested and divided by racism and violence. For Palestinians, the history of Lyd is a painful and tragic decline. This is why our film dares to pose the following question: What would the city look like if the Israeli occupation of Lyd had never taken place? Using previously unpublished archival footage of Israeli soldiers who perpetrated the massacre and expulsions, the city explains that these events were so devastating that they fractured its reality, and today there exist two Lyds, one occupied and one free. As the film unfolds, documentary sequences follow a set of characters in their daily lives that account for this city's Palestinian past. Sequences created in animation use the language of speculative fiction to envision an alternative reality where the same documentary characters lived free from the trauma of the past and the violence of the present. As the film shifts between fantastic reality and documentary reality, it leaves the viewer questioning what future should prevail. » Conditions: Room rates Links: https://www.culturedepalestine.org/articles/154251-lyd Provided by OpenAgenda SAS
