GIFT (10:00 PM) (Psych rock - New York, US) Every moment has its richness, complexity, and uniqueness. Once it’s gone, it cannot be found again. Can you be present? Can you fully open yourself and appreciate it in all its dimensions — the ugliness and confusion as much as the beauty and joy? The members of the psychedelic rock quintet GIFT, hailing from Brooklyn (New York), believe it’s possible. Momentary Presence, their debut album, is a testament to this quest and a celebration of the eternal moment. These teachings, drawn from Be Here Now (1971), the spiritual guide and countercultural manifesto by guru Ram Dass, resonate particularly strongly in 2022. TJ Freda, the leader of GIFT, has applied these lessons to his own search for peace. He has found transcendence through music: alongside his bandmates Jessica Gurewitz, Kallan Campbell, Justin Hrabovsky, and Gabe Camarano, he knows how to create soundscapes that are both tormented and beautiful. At the heart of these whirlwinds is Freda himself — taming the storm, lighting up the chaos, singing of psychic destabilization and the quest for balance, with a caressing voice. Momentary Presence, GIFT's first LP, naturally finds its place on the new label co-founded by Oliver Ackermann, a figure in the New York noise-rock and psychedelic scene (A Place to Bury Strangers, Death by Audio).
