Unemployment Benefits: Relaxed Access Conditions for Certain Job Seekers Published on April 23, 2026 - Service Public / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

To qualify for unemployment benefits, you must justify a certain number of days worked. Since April 1, "first-time" job seekers (that is, those who have never received unemployment benefits, or who have not received them for more than 20 years) can benefit from an exemption regarding this minimum work duration requirement.

In general, to receive the Return to Work Assistance Allowance (ARE), you must have worked at least 6 months during the 24 months (or during the 36 months, if you are 55 years or older) preceding the end of your employment contract.

Since April 1, 2026, "first-time" job seekers can benefit from the Return to Work Assistance Allowance if they have worked at least 5 months (108 days or 758 hours worked) during the 24 or 36 months, depending on their age, preceding the end of their employment contract.

"First-time" job seekers are employees who are unemployed and have never benefited from unemployment insurance, or who have not benefited from it for more than 20 years.

To receive the ARE, these job seekers must also meet all other eligibility conditions required of all unemployed individuals (be registered with France Travail, actively search for a new job if they are considered immediately available job seekers, etc.).

The minimum duration for receiving the ARE is set at 5 months (152 calendar days) for "first-time" job seekers who meet the derogatory affiliation condition of 5 months of work. This minimum duration of payment is generally 6 months.

The calculation of the amount of the Return to Work Assistance Allowance and other compensation modalities (cumulative ARE and employment, deferred compensation, etc.) are determined according to the same conditions as for other job seekers.
