Students: steps to take regarding your housing this summer Published on June 6, 2025 - Updated on May 22, 2026 - Service Public / Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
As the academic year comes to an end, did you know that you are not required to leave your student accommodation? How can you keep it during the summer? And if you leave, what should you do if you receive personalized housing assistance (APL)? Service Public tells you what to do depending on your situation.

Keeping or not keeping your student accommodation during the summer
- If you are housed in a Crous residence (Regional Centers for University and School Works), you can generally keep your student accommodation during the summer, until the end of August, provided you pay the rent. You can also leave before the summer if you do not wish to pay rent during the summer period.
If you wish to keep your Crous accommodation for the next academic year, you must submit a renewal request online, according to the schedule provided by your residence.
- If you rent from a private individual with a standard furnished lease, and the landlord does not wish to take back the accommodation, the contract is automatically renewed from one year to the next. You cannot keep the accommodation if you have signed a student lease or a non-renewable mobility lease that ends in June. Contact your landlord to find out the lease renewal procedures.
Can you receive APL during the summer?
If you are a beneficiary of personalized housing assistance (APL), you must in all cases specify your situation for the summer to your Family Allowance Fund (Caf), in the "My Account" space, on the Caf website or via the Caf - Mon Compte mobile app.
The Caf asks you whether you will keep your accommodation in July and August. In the absence of information, it assumes that you are leaving before the end of June. You will no longer receive housing assistance for the summer.
What steps to take depending on your situation?
-
You keep your accommodation during the summer and pay the rent: indicate this to the Caf before the end of July to continue receiving aid.
-
You keep your accommodation for the start of the next term but do not pay rent this summer: indicate this to the Caf before the end of July to benefit from aid starting at the beginning of the term.
-
You return your accommodation this summer and go back at the start of the term: in this case, you declare that you are not keeping the accommodation but you do not change your address. The return to the premises must be reported so that the APL is paid again.
-
You are changing accommodation: you must declare your move and update your file with your new address in the "My Profile" section. You can make a new APL application as soon as the new lease is signed.
To benefit from APL, you must occupy your accommodation for at least 8 months during a year. You must therefore be absent for less than 4 months.
APL only applies to your accommodation located in France.
