Discover the history of the incredible tapestries from the Werniers Manufacture!
Conference given by Juliette Singer, Chief Curator, Director of the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille and the Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse. The exhibition "Treasures of Wool and Silk" showcases for the first time an exceptional collection of 18th-century tapestries, belonging to the Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse and the Palais des Beaux-Arts. Created in Lille at the manufacture run by Guillaume Werniers, and later by his widow Catherine Ghuys, they have undergone an exceptional restoration campaign from 2023 to 2026. The conference will delve into the history of these tapestries and explore their various themes, including the success of the "Tenières" inspired by the paintings of David Teniers II. Providing insight into the behind-the-scenes of its implementation, it will discuss the layout of this exhibition, designed in collaboration with the École d'architecture de Lille, and the presence of a loom from the Manufacture de Witt, which helps to understand the manufacturing techniques. → A free visit of the exhibition is offered prior to the conference, starting at 5:45 PM.
