As part of the exhibition “Métamorphoses, les chapeaux de Maison Michel” at the Galerie du 19M, Colombian artist Sofía Bonilla Otoya invites you to explore grosgrain ribbon through simple gestures: folding, twisting, knotting and weaving. Traditionally associated with millinery, the material here becomes a means of creating shapes, volumes and colorful compositions.
Workshop program with Sofía Bonilla Otoya: From grosgrain ribbons, participants create relief and play with color. They draw inspiration from photographs of ornamental details observed in the north of Paris: wrought ironwork, floral motifs or architectural ornaments. Each participant chooses a motif, reinterprets it and then translates it into three dimensions using ribbons. Over the course of the workshop, knots, flowers and woven forms appear, showing how a single material can give rise to many creations. Detached from its original setting, the form becomes a graphic, textile and sculptural creation. Participants leave with their creation. Trained in the philosophy of art and aesthetics, then at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, she has developed a transdisciplinary practice at the intersection of sculpture, installation, painted or dyed textile and video. Language is the starting point of her work. Sentences, poetic licenses and fictional hypotheses become possible spaces in which material extends thought and gives shape to parallel narratives. Attentive to the circulation of colors, forms and uses, Sofía Bonilla Otoya questions what appears self-evident. Ornament, writing, jewelry, accessory or fabric then reveal the stories of transmission, industrialization, class and power that run through objects and imaginations, at the heart of her contemporary and sensitive work.
