Through her photographic exhibition, Marta Nascimento takes us to Mexico, where she captured the intensity of the Day of the Dead, between reverence and popular celebration. A sensory immersion in one of Latin America's most emblematic rituals.
At our Ephemeral Gallery of Comptoir des Voyages and along rue Saint-Victor in Paris, discover Día de Muertos, the exhibition by artist Marta Nascimento. Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Marta Nascimento studied journalism before heading to the Amazon to document the social tensions of this unique region. For twenty years, she has documented the economic and social upheavals in Latin America and Europe, shedding light on the repercussions of globalization. Her work is published in the French and international press. In parallel, she explores new narrative forms and creates video narratives that question our place in a changing world. Each year, from the last days of October, Mexico begins to celebrate Día de Muertos, between pre-Hispanic heritage and Catholic tradition. Far from being sad, this celebration, inscribed in UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage, is experienced as an explosion of life: altars covered with offerings, garlands of marigolds, skull makeup, vigils and processions… Families are reunited with their deceased loved ones. Their own way of coming to terms with death and honoring those who are gone. Believing that this ritual is a precious gateway to the Mexican soul, Comptoir des Voyages invited the photographer to explore it, camera in hand. From this journey came images that tell as much about collective fervor as about the intimacy of families. We welcome you at the Ephemeral Gallery at 12, rue Saint-Victor, Paris 5e. Opening reception on Thursday, October 29, from 6 PM to 8:30 PM. Friday, October 30 to Friday, November 6, from 2 PM to 6:30 PM. Saturdays, October 31 and November 7, from 12 PM to 6:30 PM. Closed on Sunday.
