Opening a Bank Account Without a Permanent Contract: The Effective List

The common bad advice given to newcomers is "just pick any bank to start with." In reality, this choice can save or waste a lot of time depending on your situation. Without a permanent contract, the real question is not "will a bank accept me?" but "what do I need in the next thirty days?"

1. Start with Your Actual Needs

Make a list of what you need to do right away:

  • receive a salary or scholarship;
  • quickly provide a bank account statement;
  • pay rent;
  • deposit cash or checks;
  • obtain a reliable physical card;
  • request an overdraft or proof of banking stability.

If your urgency is just to have an IBAN and a functioning card, a neobank may be sufficient at first. If you need to deposit checks, convince a real estate agency, or discuss a loan later, a traditional bank may become useful sooner than expected.

2. Neobanks: Fast, but Not Magical

Neobanks excel in three areas: simple account opening, clear application, and short processing times. This is convenient when you’ve just arrived, don’t yet have all the French habits, and mainly need to unlock processes.

But their limitations are real:

  • some agencies or administrations misunderstand foreign IBANs;
  • depositing cash or checks is not always straightforward;
  • customer service may be adequate for a bug, but less so for a complex case;
  • they don’t necessarily replace a banking relationship when you’re looking for a loan or negotiated overdraft.

In short: excellent starting tool, not a universal solution.

3. Traditional Banks: Slower, Sometimes More Useful

A traditional bank often requires more patience. Appointments, documentation, explanations about your status, and sometimes misunderstandings if your case deviates from the standard. But it may be more suitable if you want to establish a more "classic" life in France: regular salaries, rents, insurances, future loan applications, clearer history.

The important point: present your case as a stable project, even without a permanent contract. An employer's letter, a training certificate, a lease, a guarantor, a scholarship, regular foreign bank statements, or a job offer can provide reassurance. An empty space is more concerning than the absence of a permanent contract.

4. The Document List That Really Helps

When you make an appointment or open online, prepare:

  • ID;
  • residence permit or proof of regular presence;
  • proof of address;
  • document explaining your actual income;
  • active phone;
  • if possible, a brief summary of your situation.

The summary can fit in five lines: "I’m arriving in France, I’m in an apprenticeship / freelancing / training / actively job searching, here are my documents, and I need an account for this purpose." This clarity greatly improves the quality of the exchange.

5. What If You're Refused?

Don’t internalize the refusal as a definitive judgment. Sometimes it’s just the agency, sometimes it’s the person in front of you, sometimes it’s a misunderstood file. And above all, there is the right to an account through the Banque de France. It’s not the first option I recommend, but it’s a real safety net when you’re going in circles.

6. The Most Effective Strategy

If you’re starting from scratch, the most pragmatic strategy is often:

  1. quickly open a simple account to unlock your daily life;
  2. stabilize your documents and address;
  3. then decide if a traditional bank offers you real value.

The mistake is wanting to solve all your future banking needs with a single account opening. Start with what saves you time now. You can refine it later.
